Small ideas for grown-ups

Build early math confidence through play

Early math grows through noticing amounts and explaining what changed. Keep the numbers small, use real objects and leave room for a second try.

Start with a small group

Count a few blocks, fruit or buttons together. Touch each object once and invite your child to check the total in their own way.

Think aloud about changes

Add one object or take one away, then ask what is different. Wonder together before naming an answer.

Praise the strategy

Notice careful counting, grouping or trying again. The goal is to make sense of a small problem, not to finish fastest.
